Gerkin claims overall spot in state meet

TAYLOR COUNTY— Local youth Skye Gerkin has put years of work into her tumbling and gymnastic abilities, spending long hours in the gym perfecting her craft for competition, and recently she had the opportunity to test her skills at the 2021 West Virginia State Gymnastic Meet.

The meet, which was hosted by Flipstarz, at the Beckley Raleigh County Convention Center

last weekend,  provided Gerkin with the perfect opportunity to display the true athleticism that can be found in Taylor County.

And while at competing she did just that, as her performances earned her several top spots.

Throughout the meet Gerkin participated in four events displaying her skilled, practiced and graceful moves  which earned her three gold medals and a silver.

According to her mother, Holly Hess, Gerkin placed first on floor with a  score of 9.50, and also earned first on vault with a 9.30.

She went on to impress the judges with her balance and precision placing second on beam with a score of 9.20, and was the first-place finisher on bars earning an 8.95 for that event.

As a member of the Mountain Magic Gymnastics team, which is based out of Aerial Port Gymnastics Center in Fairmont, Gerkin’s  Level 6 team finished the meet with a second-place finish overall.

And when all was said and done, Gerkin would reign as the 2021 State Champion Level 6 for her division with an overall score of 36.95.

Gerkin is a sixth grade student at Taylor County Middle School, and while she does not participate in school sports, she proudly represents the young, hard working athletes that the county possesses.

Congratulations to Skye Gerkin and her team on an outstanding meet.
