George Ralph Powell Sr.


George Ralph Powell Sr., 90, of Main St. Weston passed away unexpectedly on July 3, 2017 at his residence, as a result of the general wearing out process that occurs from living a nice long, productive, and happy life.

 

He was born in Flemington on February 12, 1927 a son of the late Ralph Hunter Powell and Sarah Ola Keener Powell.

 

On November 19, 1965 he married Helen Louise Montgomery who will miss him dearly after 51 years of marriage.

 

His devoted nature and humorous spirit will be carried on by his four daughters: Judy Baker and husband, Danny, of Grafton, Donna Wagoner and husband, Ivan, of Grafton, Vickie Teets and husband, Leroy, of Simpson, and Janie Taylor and companion, Rodney, of Grafton; three grandchildren: Ranee Kirk, Rusty Welch, and Amanda Austin; nine great grandchildren; one sister, Juanita Riffle and husband, Robert G., of Flemington; and several nieces and nephews.

 

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Powell; and two sons: John Richard Powell and George “Buddy” Powell.

 

George was an honored veteran of the United States Army having served during World War II. He worked at the WV Glass Specialty Co, then the Weston State Hospital, and later retired from the Stonewall Resort Golf Course with 10 years of service. He was an avid sports enthusiast who enjoyed coaching little league and attending as many Lewis County sporting events as possible. He was a member of the Bendale United Methodist Church.

 

Friends and family will gather for a Graveside Service at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens in Jane Lew at 2:00 p.m., on Thursday, July 6, 2017 with Reverend Ronald C. Brown officiating. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Bendale United Methodist Church c/o Pastor Ronald C. Brown 2370 US Hwy 19N Jane Lew, WV 26378.
