GCH Auxiliary heart of hospital

GRAFTON—Grafton City Hospital’s heart, their auxiliary, works diligently throughout the year behind the scenes to help the hospital grow.

The Grafton City Hospital Auxiliary name may have changed throughout the years, but their purpose has remained the same; to help the city hospital in all ways possible.

From countless volunteer hours to holding special events, the auxiliary has supported the hospital throughout the years.

Currently there are 47 active members in the auxiliary and nine honorary members. The members help with events and activities all with one goal; to help the hospital.

It all started in 1944, when the Women’s Club of the City was busy raising money for needed items for the hospital. Since then, the auxiliary has grown and has helped at the hospital in countless ways.

Carrie Fitzwater, Special Event Coordinator for the group shared that throughout the year, the auxiliary provides and helps with many services and events at the hospital including, the gift shop, health fair, blood drives, special meals for the holidays, bingo at the Taylor Health Care Center, residents of the month and anything else they feel there is a need for.

The auxiliary also sponsors a scholarship for one student each year that wants to go into the medical field.

Grafton City Hospital CEO Pat Shaw shared that he can’t even begin to quantify all the amazing things the Hospital Auxiliary has done. It’s an incredibly dedicated group of volunteers that do a variety of things for the betterment of the hospital.

“There are countless volunteer hours in the Gift Shop, they have a variety of sales such as jewelry, uniforms/shoes, book sales, and bakes sales in order to reinvest those proceeds back into the hospital,” he expressed.

Recently, they helped to purchase a King Vision Laryngoscope for the Emergency Department, which helps with intubating patients.

Shaw also revealed that they helped purchase countertops for the Lab, Life Pack Defibrillators, equipment for the kitchen, helped renovate and decorate waiting rooms and much more.

“We’re very blessed to have the Auxiliary supporting the hospital and our patients,” Shaw expressed.

In order to continue to help Grafton City Hospital grow its services the auxiliary hosts fundraisers throughout the year.

Fitzwater shared that on Wednesday, April 17, the Grafton City Hospital Auxiliary will be holding an Easter bake sale from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

It will be held in the main lobby area of the hospital, near the Gift Shop. While there, be sure to stop in the gift shop to find some unique gifts.

“Come by and get your Easter goodies,” she said, “We will have lots of homemade items sure to please the sweet tooth.”

Then on Monday April 22, from 1:00-6:00 p.m., and Tuesday, April 23, from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., the Grafton City Hospital Auxiliary will be hosting a uniform sale.

The sale will be held in the Private Dining room next to the cafeteria in the basement area of the hospital. There will be uniforms of many styles and colors, as well as shoes and medical equipment.

Proceeds from both of the sales benefit the programs of the auxiliary, which go toward assisting the hospital with various projects.
