Flemington Elementary School earns 2016 Distinguished School honors

FLEMINGTON—Flemington Elementary School has been designated as a National Title I Distinguished School in 2016, for exceptional student achievement.

According to principal Jeanne Gren, only 54 schools in the nation were recognized this year, with Flemington being the only school to be designated, in the state of West Virginia.

Gren shared that today; the school will reveal the banner that was sent to them by the National Title I Association, and the staff members will also be wearing specially designed shirts, in honor of the designation.

“We will be showing the love we have for our school today,” commented Gren. “ I couldn’t be more excited and proud. This is what we strive for, to better the education of our students, so it is a wonderful achievement.”

The National Title I Association is dedicated to helping more children reach their academic potential. The Association provides educational leaders at the state, and local levels with the opportunity to work together to share ideas on effective and innovative programs, identify problems, as well as, solutions and represent the needs of Title I families.

According to a press release, the program was implemented to highlight selected schools, that have successfully used their Title I federal funds to improve the education for their students. The program has been in place since 1996, working to acknowledging the success of hundreds of schools, on one of three categories.

The categories in which the schools are recognized include, exceptional student performance for two consecutive years, significantly closing the achievement gap between student groups, or for excellence in serving special populations of students such as, homelessness, migrant, and English learners.

Title I is the largest federally-funded, pre-college education program in the United States, providing funding to school districts to aid in the education of economically disadvantaged students.

The 2016 Distinguished Schools will be honored on February 22, at the 2017 National Title I Conference in Long Beach, California.

“This is such an honor. I am very proud of our students and staff,” shared Gren. “Myself, along with third grade teacher, Tammy Daniels, and second grade teacher, Kathy Jones, will be traveling to the National Conference next week.”

Gren reported that while at the conference, they would have the opportunity to participate in workshops and special events to learn teaching practices.

Attendees will also be treated to a reception in celebration of being recognized as a distinguished school, and a slide show of the awarded schools will be presented.
