Exciting new changes for the Lady Cat track team

GRAFTON—The 2017 Grafton High School girls track team will have a “new look” this year, as they welcome first year head coach, Becky Lake.

Lake has taken over for veteran Coach Eva Robinson, who retired from coaching after last season.

Lake brings a wealth of knowledge, and experience to the Bearcat program, as she was a very successful high school and collegiate athlete.

Coach Lake is very excited to get started, as she welcomes several returning lettermen from last year’s team.

The off season has been very busy for the Lady Cats.

“We started over conditioning last November, right after Thanksgiving,” said Lake.

“We got them into the weight room and started to build some core strength with these girls. As I told the girls, we can have the edge on everyone if we have the strength.”

Returning to this year’s squad is senior Sydney Keener.

Keener is a four-year letterman with the Lady Cats, and was a crucial member of last year’s shuttle relay team, that ran in the state meet.

That team consisted of Keener, Morgan Loomis, Brooklyn Perks, Bronlie Jacobs and Morgan Griffith.

Also returning this year is junior Kaycie Cochran, who also qualified last year to run in the state track meet in the 800 meters.

“Kaycie has a mission this year,” said Lake. “As Kaycie has told me many times this year, her mission is to break my 800 meter time that I ran when I was at GHS.”

“Morgan Loomis is anther returning senior that will help us this year,” said Lake. “She is a very versatile athlete that will probably compete in several events for us this season,” she added.

There are many returning seniors to this year’s team that will make an instant impact on the track and they include Morgan Loomis, Cassie Delawder, Courtney Gray, Cacia Gray and Chelsey Rager.

“We are also looking to our junior class for some leadership this season,” commented Lake. “They are a very strong class and they will do great things for us this season.”

The junior class includes Amanda Moran, Emily Smith, Micah Collins, Cochran, Suzie Clelland, Rachel McKinney, Amber Poling, Brooklyn Perks, Alyssa Wright and Bronlie Jacobs.

Coach Lake will also welcome two new coaches to this year’s team.

Coaches Kim Wood and Olivia Shaw, will bring their vast knowledge and skill to the Lady Cat program.

The Lady Bearcats will open their season March 28, as they travel to Clarksburg to run at RCB High School.

The first event is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.
