England earns Taylor County Athlete of the Week nomination

Dedication, skill, sportsmanship and being a team player are all skills that are demonstrated by this week’s Taylor County Athlete of the Week.

Layne England has been playing soccer for as long as he possibly could. He first began his venture on the field when he was young, playing recreational and travel soccer as soon as it was offered for his age group.

A love of the sport, coupled with drive and determination to only get better each time he steps onto the field, England works constantly to perfect his skill set.

“He practices his craft endlessly and has been known to make some spectacular plays with the ball,” said Bearcat Soccer Head Coach Arthur Knight.

Working his way up through youth and middle school play, England quickly garnered the attention of his coaching staff at the high school level and has been a four-year starter for the Bearcats, playing at forward.

“Layne has been one of our main contributors on offense during his four years as a Bearcat,” Knight revealed.

In fact, his smart footwork and ball control helped to propel his team to some impressive finishes last week. On Tuesday, September 20, he put three scores on the board against Elkins in a 7-0 shut out game.

Then, on Thursday night, while taking on the Preston County Knights, he found the back of the net twice and was also credited with an assist, helping in the dominating 8-1 Bearcat victory.

As if that wasn’t already impressive enough, England was credited with another goal and assist last Saturday, September 24 in a 5-1 win over the Keyser Tornadoes.

As of September 26, England had recorded am impressive 10 goals and six assists on the season, showcasing not only remarkable skill but notable teamwork.

But it isn’t just a strong performance on the field that has commanded the attention of England’s coaches, but the attitude he possesses within the team.

“This year, especially, Layne has grown into a leader for our team and has helped to guide some of our younger players into what we expect as a Bearcat Soccer player,” Knight voiced.

With the soccer season still underway, it is without a doubt that England will continue to lead by example while he works to increase his record this year.

Congratulations to Layne England on being named this week’s Taylor County Student Athlete of the Week. Keep up the great work on the field!
