Emily Viani and Hadley Horne named as this week's Taylor County Athletes of the Week

This week’s Taylor County Athlete of the Week (AOTW) recognition has been claimed by two fierce Lady Bearcats who, while still early in their athletic high school journeys and seasons, have already made major impacts for their teams.

Sophomore Emily Viani is a returning member of the Grafton High School Cross Country team, and when the program opened their season a week ago, she put on a display of outstanding athleticism.

Nominated by her head coach, PD Louzy, Viani has been chosen as an AOTW after dominating the competition at the Lady Bearcats season opener, the Autumn Classic.

Despite being pinned up against 154 runners from 28 different teams from across the state, Viani navigated the 5K course to her own advantage, with a steady speed that was hard for her opponents to beat.

She finished the day at 13th place, an impressive feat when competing against over 100 competitors.

And even more impressive, Louzy shared that she completed the trail with a time of 21:41.

This finish by Viani assisted the Lady Bearcats to open with a 10th place overall finish.

With this solid performance early on, her coaches are excited to see how she progresses as the season wears on.

Another Lady Bearcat making great contributions to her team is young soccer player and Grafton High School freshman Hadley Horne.

Horne, also nominated by her head coach Lorraine Isner, played a crucial role in the success saw by her team during their season opener this week.

Horne plays at the midfielder and forward positions for both the junior varsity and varsity Lady Bearcat squads.

Monday, the JV team opened their season at Buckhannon-Upshur, and thanks to a drive by Horne, and a left footed kick that landed the ball in the BU net, the contest ended in a 2-2 tie.

She continued to assist her team with goals when the varsity Lady Bearcats opened their season on Thursday against Williamstown.

Horne showcased more impressive play during the matchup, recording one interception, four shots on goal, tallied five shots and connected for two goals.

With the combine stats between the two contests, Horne is credited with scoring more than half of the team’s total goals.

As a freshman, Horne is sure to continue growing and developing in the sport of soccer and make major impacts on the field during her time as a Lady Bearcat.

Congratulations to Emily Viani and Hadley Horne for being named as this week’s Taylor County Athletes of the Week.
