Taylor County Athlete of the Week is back, and this week, we are showcasing two outstanding young men, who have made great strides in their respective sports, assisting their teams to wins and making big plays.
Grafton High School sophomore Dustin Keener has been spending time on the greens, learning the game of golf since he was just five years old. Now that time spent wondering the links, clubs in tow, has taken Keener to the next level of play, and seen him develop into a formidable opponent.
While it is still early in the Bearcat’s golf season, and this only being his second year playing competitively, Keener has taken pride in improving his skills on the course, and it shows.
Starting out the 2021 season, Keener led the team in scoring, shooting a 93, during the Bearcat’s season opener in Charleston, and has continued to improve since.
He went on to showcase another outstanding performance while competing in Parkersburg, improving his own personal score by seven strokes, recording a final score of 86.
More recently, as Keener continues to grow as a player, he received recognition for an impressive score.
Last week, Keener took to the greens of Woodview Golf Course in Oak Glen and had a most impressive day, paring on four of the nine holes played and recording an eagle on the final hole.
On the day, Keener recorded a low score of 40, earning him the Low Medalist Award and leading his team to their first tournament victory of the season over the Oak Glen Bears and Buckeye Local, from Ohio.
Meanwhile, senior Bearcat Justin Spiker has also been making big plays for his team, showing promise for the upcoming Grafton High School Football season.
Spiker, stationed as a wide receiver for the program, assisted his team to an impressive performance during a seven-on-seven tournament held back in June, making multiple touchdown catches for the Cats.
Like Keener, Spiker has also taken the off-season seriously, working to improve as an athlete and pushing himself to train even harder, and has continues to make those big preseason plays for the Grafton squad, making him a vital key to what the Cats hope to be a bounce back season.
Last weekend, the Bearcats took on the Frankfort Falcons at home for their first scrimmage, in preparation of the upcoming season.
While Frankfort finished as 17th ranked in the state at the conclusion of the 2020 season, their defense was no match for Spiker’s speed and ability to make difficult and clutch catches.
Throughout the contest, he worked the defenders and field to his advantage receiving three touchdown catches.
With plenty of time remaining in Keener’s golf season, and Spiker’s football season just beginning, we can count on seeing great things come from these local athletes.
Congratulations Dustin Keener and Justin Spiker for being named as this week’s Taylor County Athletes of the Week.
