TYGART LAKE— Tygart Lake State Park Naturalist Jacob Jackson invites you to celebrate the arrival of spring and relish in the warming weather with a scenic hike around the park.
The Green Day Spring Equinox Hike is slated for Saturday, March 20, with participants meeting at the campground area and taking off on the two mile Bus Loop Trail promptly at 10:00 a.m.
The Bus Loop Trail opened up to the public just last March and was a labor of love completed by the hands of devoted volunteers, according to Jackson.
“We had a group come in from the West Virginia Mountain Bike Association and plot the route,” he explained. “The project was a great effort of a group of wonderful volunteers who put in a lot of time and effort in clearing the area and having it ready for people to enjoy.”
He went on to share that this trail differs from others that the park offers because it is the first one to make an actual loop and offers plenty for its travelers to explore.
“Spring is coming, and with this trail, hikers will have a great opportunity to see what all is starting to green up,” Jackson added. “Winter is over, and it is time to get out and moving again!”
The trail will have hikers navigating over some hilly terrain and is likely to be muddy in spots; something to consider when choosing footwear for the day. Jackson also suggests bringing along some water.
Registration is not required. In order to participate, all one must do is arrive to the aforementioned location before the start time.
The event is free to the public and furry companions are welcomed to join as long as they are on a leash.
At the conclusion of the hike, all those who took part will be presented with signature Green Day Hike patches to commemorate the day.
Tygart Lake State Park hosts similar hiking events throughout the year with the changing of seasons.
Just last month, the park hosted a Heart and Sole Day Hike, and will offer additional opportunities in the summer and fall.
Despite the park being a great asset to the community, people often tend to forget about it when making their weekend plans, and that is something Jackson hopes these walks help with.
“A lot of times, we just don’t think about what is right here in our own backyard. I’m hoping that in offering activities like these hikes, that more people will start thinking about our park when making plans to be outdoors, and they will take advantage of just how great the park and lake are,” Jackson expressed.
