GRAFTON—Sometimes, there’s nothing wrong with using one race to get ready for another. That’s exactly what Grafton Bearcats Cross Country Coach P.D. Louzy was faced with this past week, as he took some of his runners to the Mountaintop Combo Race at Preston High School in Kingwood.
“We kind of used this race as a workout for the week,” explained Louzy. “This is where the Big 10 Conference race is this year and none of my kids have ever run the whole course so I wanted my kids to see it. I had several runners either sick or banged up. On the girls’ side, I didn’t have my #4 or #5 runners. Also, I didn’t have my #2 or #3 runners for the boys’ race.”
For the Bearcat boys, Ryan Maier was credited with a 15th-place finish after running a time of 20:17.81. Seniors Christopher Loomis and Devin Criss also finished with respectable runs of 22:02.91 and 22:05.28.
On the girls’ side, freshman Avrie Kelley finished in 14th place with a time of 25:05.59, followed by freshman teammate Kendra Rogucki with a 25:41.94. Sophomore Meredith Maier ran a 26:41.06, and senior Megan Kisner recorded a time of 26:56.47.
The Bearcats will take a much-needed break from running and resume their schedule on September 21st when they host the Bearcat Invitational. They will follow that by heading to the Ritchie County Invite a week later on September 28th.
“I purposely put this break in our schedule so our kids will be fresh for it. We are hosting Regionals in October so my hope is that we run well at our home meet,” Louzy added.
