This week’s Taylor County Athlete of the Week may be a young competitor and new to his respective sport at Taylor County Middle School (TCMS), yet he has already made a name for himself.
TCMS sixth grader Carter Gillespie has been an athlete since a very young age, testing the waters in basketball, football, baseball and most recently, cross country.
Gillespie is an all-star on the baseball diamond, and in order to stay in shape, remain active and represent his school, he became a member of the Knights Cross Country team and has been dominating each week.
Gillespie’s pure athletic talent earned his spot in the varsity XC team, and each meet, he continues to improve, blowing past competition and earning high placement, assisting his team to overall wins.
He opened the season earning a 17th place finish at the Knights home meet the TCMS invitational, turning in a time of 12:36, ran a 10:25 at the Chick-fil-a Invitational that was held in Mineral Wells, which secured him a 23rd place finish and sped his way to a 7th place completion during the Bearcat Invitational with a time of 12:00, shaving 36 seconds off his previously recorded time for the course.
Gillespie pushes himself both physically and mentally, testing his limits and always reaching to expand on them.
Most recently, the team competed in a new meet for this season, which was held in Barrackville.
The course was more than two miles long and boasted steep hills for the runners to climb.
Gillespie managed to conquer these extreme inclines with ease and was the second runner to cross the finish line out of 62 competitors.
He breezed by his opponents and recorded the fastest time of 13:39, just 16 second slower than the first-place finisher, who happened to be a fellow Knight.
Gillespie’s strong performance helped propel his entire team into a top overall finish, as they claimed first-place in the entire competition.
Gillespie gives 100 percent to everything he does and shows unrelenting dedication to his sports and teams. He is constantly working to improve and demolish his own personal bests.
As just a sixth grader, Gillespie is sure to see much success in the running world.
Congratulations Carter Gillespie on being named as this week’s Taylor County Athlete of the week!
