This week’s Taylor County Athlete of the Week is a young dynamo wrapped in a small package when it comes to competition in sports.
Taylor County Middle School (TCMS) eighth grader Carly Vandergrift is a standout volleyball player,t rack and field competitor and member of the band.
Vandergrift is an all-star on the TCMS Track and Field team as a hurdler but also will ribbon in numerous other events during each outing.
Vandergrift played volleyball for a rec league, but decided this year to try out for the TCMS Lady Knights and she secured a spot on the Varsity roster.
She has been a steady presence coming off the bench each game providing support and needed energy along with points during some tough situations.
Vandergrift continues to improve, assisting her team to overall wins.
“Carly is my most improved player on the team this year…by far. This young lady brings a special energy to the team and is a pleasure to coach,” TCMS Lady Knight Volleyball Head Coach Kelley Larew stated.
Vandergrift not only excels in the varied sports she plays but she also excels where it counts, in the classroom.
Vandergrift is a consistently good student earning Honor Roll accolades each semester.
During the offseason she can be found enjoying many of her numerous hobbies.
Whether it be running, dancing or baking she keeps herself busy, but she also knows how to relax with a good book.
Vandergrift will continue to rally her various teams and contribute the positive energy needed to excel at everything she touches.
