MORGANTOWN—The Grafton High School tennis team competed in the 2019 Region II tournament this weekend in Morgantown. Most of the event was moved indoors because of the rainy weather.
On the girls side of the net the only win for GHS came in the #3 doubles bracket as Chloe Collins and Jocelyn Countryman defeated a team from Notre Dame 8-1. Collins and Countryman would then lose their next match to Williamstown 8-5.
On the boys side of the event there were several Bearcats recording wins in the competition. At the #1 singles spot, Emilien Brazilier defeated players from Moorefield (8-1), Parkersburg Catholic (8-3) and Bridgeport (8-0). With the three wins Brazilier will earn a spot in the WV state tournament in Charleston.
At the #2 spot Marik Chambers defeated a player from Liberty 8-3 but then lost to Braxton County 8-3.
The boys #1 doubles team of Emilien Brazilier and Marik Chambers defeated Bridgeport in the quarterfinals 8-6, they lost to Elkins in the semi finals in a tie break 9-8 (7-5)and then they won their consolation match against Lewis 8-3 giving them a ticket to the state tournament.
The boys #3 doubles team of Aiden Kittle and Jaylen Poole defeated a team from Notre Dame 8-6 then lost to a team from Moorefield 8-1.
Brazilier and Chambers will begin their state championship bid this Thursday as they head to Coonskin Park in Charleston to begin play. The times were not available at the time of deadline.
