Bearcubs take the court on the West Side

GRAFTON—A group of fourth graders from Taylor County have found late season success recently playing in the West Side Basketball League in Morgantown.

The league consists of six teams from Monongalia, Harrison, Taylor, and Preston Counties and play competitively on Saturdays and Sundays from the beginning of December through the end of February at Skyview Elementary, Mylan Park Elementary, and Westwood Middle.

The Taylor County squad, known as the Bearcubs, are coached by Eric Maier, Ben Kinsey, and Chad Gray, and this season marks the first time that the team has played in the league.

The team struggled early in the beginning of the season for various reasons, from facing full-court presses or simply being outsized physically but still came into the post-season tournament as the #5 seed. They went on to knock off the #4 and #3 seeds and will face #1 seed Morgantown Legends on Saturday at Skyview Elementary.

The tournament is double elimination so the Bearcubs would need to beat the Legends twice while the Legends would only need to defeat the Bearcubs once to win the championship.

Tipoff is scheduled for 11:30am.

The complete Bearcubs’ tournament results are listed below.

*Lost to #2 Havoc

*Beat #3 Bridgeport

*Beat #4 Mustangs

*Beat #2 Havoc

*#5 Bearcubs vs. #1 Legends - Championship
