GRAFTON—The Grafton Bearcats boys’ soccer team returned to action recently as they hosted the Elkins Tigers on Thursday, September 26th at McKinney Field in Grafton and came away with a solid win.
Coming into the contest having won three of their last five matches after a slow start to the season and now with most of their players back in the lineup, the Bearcats continued their recent dominant play, shutting out the Tigers by the score of 4-0.
GHS sophomore Cody Abraham was the star of the show, scoring three goals in the second half to break open a 1-0 halftime lead built by the Bearcats.
The Bearcats got on the board in the first half when senior Stetson Sanders scored off of a through-ball at the 18:15 mark, and that score would hold as Grafton would take a 1-0 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, it was all Abraham as he scored off of a rebound at the 33:12 mark, a free kick at the 22:22 mark, and a through-ball at the 12:56 mark to bring the final score to 4-0 in favor of the home team. Abraham was credited with five shots-on-goal while Sanders and seniors Marik Chambers and Tanner Taylor were each credited with multiple shots-on-goal. Chambers also tallied three steals in the contest while his younger brother Garin was also credited with multiple steals. Senior goalkeeper Alec Correia was again dominant as he kept the Tigers from scoring and was credited with the shutout.
The Bearcats returned to action on Saturday, September 28th as they hosted Petersburg at McKinney Field. Results of that match were not immediately available.
