GRAFTON—It was the beginning of Homecoming weekend for Grafton High School last Friday as the gridiron Bearcats (0-6) welcomed the Elkins Tigers to McKinney Field.
In front of a late arriving Homecoming crowd, the Bearcats would sputter once again on offense and fall to the Tigers 16 to 0.
As much as they would try to establish the run game, the Bearcats would finish the game with negative 18-yards rushing.
The majority of the carries were given to Kaden Keener who finished the game with 11 carries for -2 yards. Keener would end the game with 91 all-purpose yards including 72 yards on kickoff returns.
Cam Foley would be the only other ball carrier for GHS as he would be sacked twice for a loss of 16 total yards.
Foley would lead the air attack for Grafton as he completed 7 of 24 passes for 74 yards with one interception. Tristan Floyd was the main target for Foley as he caught 4 passes for 53 yards.
The remaining receivers for the Bearcats were Dillan America (1-6) and Keener (2-15).
The Bearcat defense did show a few bright spots on the day as they would allow the Tigers only one touchdown. The remaining nine points were scored by the Tigers field goal kicker as he made field goals from 33 yards, 24 yards and 29 yards.
Sophomore Parker Gorell led the GHS defense with nine tackles against the Tigers.
The remaining Cats with tackles were Keener (8), Cyrus Mayle (7), America (7), Cole Lambert (6), Seth Horne (5), Riley Humphries (5), Jeremiah Mitchell (5), Kenny Humphries (4), Isaiah Vanscoy (4), Floyd (2) and Bryce Trimble (2).
Lambert would also record a fumble recovery on the night, and America would add an interception to his stat line.
“Even though we didn’t play well, our kids played hard,” said first year head coach Mickey Foley. “As coaches we must to do a better job of emphasizing the fundamentals of the game. At the end of the day, we are proud of them for their effort.”
The Bearcats will be back on the road this Friday as they travel to Romney to take on the Hampshire Trojans. The game will kickoff at 7:00 p.m.
