BUCKHANNON—The Grafton Bearcat baseball program opened their season Monday night on the road, as they took to the field against Buckhannon-Upshur (BU).
Unfortunately, after a BU double the in the first inning and followed by a single and double in the second, the Bearcats found themselves down by four runs at the bottom of the third.
Bearcat Chris Miller put in his best effort to bring Grafton back within striking distance, staging a comeback with a fielder’s choice in the fourth and running for a single in the fifth, bringing the Cats just one run short of a tie game.
However, after giving up seven runs on nine hits over the course of six innings, the Bearcats would ultimately drop their season opener to BU with a score of 7-6.
Although it wasn’t the outcome they were hoping for, the team showed great promise for the season ahead, connecting with six hits during the game and claiming six runs.
Recording those hits for the Cats were Dustin Keener and Chris Miller each with two. In addition, Alex Hess and Austin Mayle each recorded one.
Earning runs for Grafton on the night were Cole Mooney, Isaac Lough, Alex Hess, Isaiah Vanscoy, Treyson Nose and Andrew Gallo.
Miller was the lone pitcher for the Bearcats striking out six batters.
The Bearcats were back on the road yesterday against University, and will be home for the first time this season on Thursday, April 22, as they host Lewis County.
