PHILIPPI—The Grafton High School boys basketball team continued their young season last Friday night as they traveled to Philippi to take on the Philip Barbour Colts. The Cats came out of the gates slow, could not recover and found themselves at the lower end of an 82—58 score at game’s end.
The Colts came out running at full speed and took a 17 point lead at the end of the first quarter. The Bearcats regrouped for the second quarter as they were only out-scored by three.
At the half, the Colts held a 45—25 lead. The Cats got more of the same in the second half as they Colts never backed off the throttle.
Jack Faulkner was the leading scorer for the Cats as he tossed in 24 points followed by Caleb Bish with 11.
The remaining points came from Garrett Moats (6), Brandon Clark (5), Logan Beltner (5), Blake Moore (2), Garrett Wellman (2), Kevin Hurst (2) and Mikey Stottlemeyer (1).
The Cats then headed to Keyser on Wednesday night to do battle with the Golden Tornados. This was a much closer game but in the end to Cats could not hold onto a halftime lead as they fall 62—56.
The Bearcats held a comfortable eight point lead behind the shooting of senior Brandon Clark in the first quarter.
The Golden Tornados gained a few points back in the second, but the Cats still held a 28—23 point lead going into the locker room.
The pivotal point in the contest came in the third quarter as Keyser outscored the Bearcats 19 to 10. The fourth quarter was back and forth with Keyser scoring two more points than the Bearcats sealing the 62 to 56 win.
Clark was the leading scorer for GHS with 18 points followed by Bish and Moats with 11 apiece.
The rest of the Bearcat points came from Faulkner (7), Dylan Massie (5), Austin Saltis (2) and Hurst (2).
The Bearcats will be back in action on January 5, as they travel to Buckhannon to take on the Buckhannon-Upshur.
The JV game will tip at 5:45 p.m, with the varsity game to follow at 7:30 p.m.
