Bearcats compete in Braxton County Invitational


GRAFTON—The Braxton County Invitational, aka “The Big 16” Wrestling Tournament, was held at Braxton County High School this past Friday and Saturday and the Grafton Bearcat wrestlers fared extremely well at the event.

Fifteen teams made the trip to Sutton and the Bearcats finished fifth overall behind Braxton County, who won the event with a score of 228.00. The Eagles were followed by Herbert Hoover (225.50), Greenbrier West (144.00), Nicholas County (134.00), Grafton (132.00), Philip Barbour (104.50), Liberty Harrison (94.50), Midland Trail (43.00), South Charleston (40.00), Capital (36.00), Notre Dame (35.00), Webster County (34.00), Calhoun County (28.00), Richwood (23.00), and Robert C. Byrd (22.00).

Grafton senior Dillon Williams (145) went 3-0 and won his championship match by the score of 7-3 to take first in his weight class while senior Garrett Williams (285), junior Noah Allman (120), and freshman Jeremiah Mitchell (152) all placed second in their respective weight classes, going 2-1 and dropping their championship matches.

Sophomore Eli Shumaker and freshman Seth Horne both finished in fourth place of their weight classes after coming up just short in their consolation matches.

The Bearcat wrestlers will be back in action on Friday and Saturday as they head to Liberty (Harrison) for the “Mountaineer Matchup”.

The Friday meet is scheduled to start at 4:00pm while the Saturday meet will continue at 10:00am.
