KINGWOOD—The Grafton High School cross country team competed in their first cross country meet of the 2017 season, last Saturday, as they ran in the Knight Night Relays.
This was a little different than the normal cross country race, as the runners teamed up and ran different legs of the race. Each team consisted of four runners that ran the 1.5 mile course, and their times were added together to form their overall team time.
The schools that ran in the relays were University, Morgantown, Parkersburg, Philip Barbour, Wheeling Park, Preston, Hampshire, East Fairmont, Parkersburg South, St. Mary’s, North Marion, Frankfort, Jefferson, John Marshall, Martinsburg, Keyser, Buckhannon Upshur, Cameron, Greenbrier East and Grafton. Many of the schools had more than one relay team.
Representing Grafton on the girls team were Aubree Collins, Hannah Moats, Hannah Louzy and Destiny Walls. The girls ran a great race with a combined time of 45:24.9, and placed twenty-eighth out of the 43 teams that entered.
Individually, the girls were less than 23 seconds apart from one another. The fastest was Moats, with a time of 11:11.3, while Collins was just behind her at 11:16.0. Senior Hannah Louzy came in with a time of 11:23.8, and Destiny Walls ran a 11:33.8.
The boys team finished in fiftieth place out of the 65 teams that entered. The boys team consisted of Austin Saltis, Aaron Pander, Christopher Loomis and Matthew Cather. Maverick Ware also ran on his own team and recorded a time of 10:29.3.
The top runner for the Bearcat boys was Cather, with a time of 9:24.7, while Loomis ran a 9:44.4. Pander then came in with a time of 10:03.8, followed by Saltis, with a time of 10:16.8.
The Cats will be back in action this Saturday ,as they travel west to compete in the St. Mary’s XC Festival.
