Bearcat swimmers start the season strong, breaking school records

PHILIPPI—The Grafton High School (GHS) Bearcats swimming team held their first meet Wednesday, November 16, at Alderson Broaddus University in Philippi, W.Va., competing against Robert C. Byrd (RCB) and Liberty High School (LHS).

During competition, Bearcat swimmers hit the pool with determination and even found themselves beating school records.

“It was a good first meet for us to build on,” said Head Coach Heather England.

Katie Novisky recorded a final time of 1:58:16 in the third event Girls 200 Yard Freestyle which breaks her previous record.

And recording a final of 6:21:67 in the thirteenth event, the Girls 500 Yard Freestyle, she outswam herself, breaking her previous record held in that event.

Will Angus would break the school record for the Boys 50 Yard Freestyle in the eighth event with a final time of 24:41. This would add to the tone set by Novisky on the day. 

Angus also went on to place second in the eighteenth event Boys 100 Yard Backstroke with a final time of 1:01:63.

The Bearcats swimmers placed first in the first event, the Girls 200 Yard Medley Relay and in the fifteenth event, the Girls 200 Yard Freestyle Relay, where they would record final times of 2:29:54 with Bella Lemon, Caroline Stead, Novisky and Bethany Lipscomb in the first event and 2:11:99 with Lemon, Jordan Niggemeyer, Bella Upton and Novisky in the fifteenth event.

Niggemeyer would place second in the third event Girls 200 Yard Freestyle, with a final time of 3:12:50.

Lemon and Upton went on to claim first and third in the seventh event, the Girls 50 Yard Freestyle with times of 30:52 and 35:80.

Patrick Foley recorded a final time of 2:39:44 in the sixth event, the Boys 200 Yard IM, a time good enough to earn second place. He would also secure a second place in the twentieth event, the Boys 100 Yard Freestyle, with a time of 1:23:57.

The Boys would record dual meet scores of 23.00 against Robert C. Byrd (77.00) and 34.00 against Liberty (0.00), The Girls would record scores of 67.00 against Robert C. Byrd (7.00) and 57.00 against Liberty (68.00).

The Bearcats also competed in The Bridge Invitational Saturday, November 19, 2022, and are slated to travel to Salem, W.Va. Saturday, November 26, for the Rt.50 Showdown.
