TAYLOR COUNTY—The Grafton High School (GHS)Bearcats Soccer team made their way to Beckley last week, to take part in the semi-final round of play at the West Virginia State Soccer Championship.

The Cats faced regular season opponent and nationally ranked Charleston Catholic, whom they played earlier this season in September.

During that match up, the Bearcats battled, but fell to the top ranked team in the state, 7-3.

Heading into the semi-finals, the Grafton team knew that they were about to face a tough team, but they wouldn’t let that deter them, and they put on an impressive showing of athleticism and skill.

When all was said and done, the Cats had held Charleston Catholic to one goal, but that one goal was the only score of the night, and Catholic walked away with a 1-0 victory.

With the loss, the outstanding Bearcats Soccer season came to a close, but not before some soccer standouts were recognized for their efforts on the field.

In addition to earning team accolades of WVSSAC 2022  “AA-A” Boys Soccer Sectional and Regional Champions, numerous Bearcats earned individuals recognitions.

The GHS Boys Soccer coaching staff is happy to announce that seven of their players made an impact this year, and earned the players 2022 End of Season Honors.

Senior Midfielder Spencer Copeland and Senior Forward Layne England tore up the turf in their final seasons as Bearcats, with both claiming spots on the All Big Ten Conference 1st Team and  All Region 1st Team.

Copeland’s skill also earned him a 1st Team All State WVHSSCA bid, while England was named to the 2nd Team All State WVHSSCA.

Junior Midfielder Landen Hulley also received 1st Team All Big Ten Conference, 1st Team All Region and 2nd Team All State WVHSSCA acknowledgments.

To round out the individual honors for this season, Senior Midfielder Colton Sanders was named to the  All Big Ten Conference 2nd Team, while Senior Keeper Bryson Kittle secured a 2nd Team All Region placement.

Freshman Defender Bryce Kelley earned a 2nd Team All Region and Senior Defender Hayden Derk received All Big Ten Conference Honorable Mention.

Congratulations to the Bearcat Soccer team and coaches on an outstanding season, and cheers to the above named student athletes for their post-season honors!
