Bearcat Golfers take to the green for the 2022 season

GRAFTON—The Grafton High School (GHS) Bearcat Golf team, comprised of 18 golfers have begun hitting the greens this season, with multiple meets already under their belt.

The team got their season underway with the Capital City Classic, held at Edgewood Country Club, on August 5.

During the meet, the Bearcats placed 13 out of 27 teams competing, as they worked to perfect their game, earning a team total score of 274. 

Veteran golfer Dustin Keener claimed the low scorer title for the team, with 85. Aiding the Bearcats on their placement for the day were Aiden Sheme, with a score of 94, followed by Wyatt Poling at 95 and Corbin Knotts coming in with a score of 97.

The Cats then made their way to Parkersburg CC High School Invitational, where they were pitted against 26 other teams. With a total team score of 288, the Bearcats found themselves placing 22 during the match.

This time, Keener and Sheme earned low scores for the day, both netting 94. Knotts (100) and Poling (105) also added to the team’s overall score.

Then, on August 9, the Bearcat Golf team hit the greens at the Oglebay WVGA Invitational, in the high school series, where they faced teams from 26 other locations.

The Cats remained consistent with scoring, once again earning a team total of 288, earning the team another 22 ranking for the day.

This time, Poling would earn the title of low scorer for the Bearcats shooting a 94 on the day, followed closely by Knotts, who earned a 96.

Keener (98) and Sheme (99) rounded out scoring for the Cats.

According to Head Coach Ed Moore, the Bearcat golfers were set to compete at Bel Meadows on August 11, but that match was cancelled due to rain.

 Moore will once again be at the helm for the GHS team, who is returning 10 players and welcoming aboard eight new golfers.

In addition to Keener, Sheme, Poling and Knotts, the Bearcats will see veteran golfers Christian Anderson, Aaron Gallo, Brayden Palmer, Brayden Perks, Caleb Stewart and Gavin Veltri returning for the 2022 season.

Isabella Bellair-Upton, Caleb Jacobs, Jonathan Matheny, Chelsea Mauller, Noah Moats, Anna Poling, Caroline Stead and Noah Uhl will take to the greens as Bearcats for the first time this season.

And with a season packed full of matches, there is sure to be some excitement in store for the golfers.

The team will be back in action on Monday, August 15, when they head to Fairmont Field Club to take on East Fairmont an Elkins High School teams during the match, as they set their sights on the state tournament that will be held in October.
