GRAFTON—The Grafton Bearcats’ golf team finished third at the Class AA, Region 1 golf tournament held at Greenhills Country Club on Monday, with senior Caden Moore securing one of the two at-large state tournament bids for the top two finishers outside of Fairmont Senior and North Marion, who finished in first and second places to win the team titles.
Moore, who played in a #1 group that included Petersburg’s Nick Fleming, Fairmont Senior’s Clark Craig, and North Marion’s Michael Harris, rallied from an 11-over finish on the front nine to shoot a 3-under on the back nine.
That rally included three straight birdies on holes 16-18 to finish with a round of 78.
Isaiah Knotts, of Frankfort, also finished with a 78 to send the two players back to the 9th hole for a sudden death playoff.
After tying on their first three attempts at the hole, Moore prevailed by landing his tee shot within 15 feet of the pin and then two-putting to make par while Knotts could only bogey.
“I knew what I had to do,” said a confident Moore. “I knew if I could get one on the green, I could par it.”
Moore only made the playoff because of a spectacular three-hole run to finish out his round. He made a 30-foot birdie putt on #16 and holed out a chip on #18 for birdie to tie Knotts at 78.
Fairmont Senior won the event with an overall three-man score of 230 while North Marion was the runner-up with a score of 246. Both teams qualified for next week’s state tournament, held at Oglebay Resort in Wheeling.
Grafton shot 264 as a team, with Christopher Miller shooting a solid 81, Aaron Weaver shooting a 105, and Gage Colebank shooting a 107.
Petersburg’s Nick Fleming secured one of the two at-large bids with his round of 72 (2-over), while Moore snatched the other away from Frankfort’s Knotts in the sudden death playoff.
