This week’s Taylor County Athletes of the Week have been taking Homeplate by storm.
Grafton High School junior Amber Smith is a key player for the Lady Bearcat softball program, as third baseman.
Smith leaves it all on the field, and has greatly contributed to her team’s winning season.
With the season nearly over, thus far, she has recorded a batting average of .329 and has an on base percentage of .504.
Smith has been on fire when stepping up to the plate this year, tallying 24 hits, of which 13 were singles, nine were doubles, and she sent two out for the triple.
In addition, she had earned ten base on balls, and has assisted her team with sending runners home, racking up 14 RBIs and has knocked in 26 runs of her own, so far.
Smith not only gives it her all on the field as a true team player, but she also excels as a student.
While juggling athletics and school can often be challenging, Smith not only rises to that challenge but goes above and beyond, as a member of the National Honor Society and National Technical Honor Society.
As she finishes out her junior year at GHS, she is looking to help lead her team to another winning season next year, as a senior.
Taylor County Little League member Luke Hess has also been knocking it out of the park this season for the Williams Contracting Royals.
Hess assisted his team in a close contest Tuesday evening. The matchup between his team and the Gavin Strong Orioles went for nine innings, and was a back and forth battle late into the evening.
Hess recorded several hits and RBIs on the night, and also slid home scoring two runs during the game.
In addition, he recently earned the title of Home Run Derby Champion, sending six bombs over the fence during the event.
Congratulations to Amber Smith and Luke Hess for being named as this week’s Taylor County Student Athletes of the Week. Continue swinging for the fences!
*Taylor County Athletes of the Week are ran weekly in our Saturday edition. Featured athletes are chosen by myself, or may be submitted by a coach. Submissions are not guaranteed to be selected, but all will be considered for the recognition. Entries can be emailed to [email protected], and should include a photo of the athlete and some of the accomplishments that qualify them for the acknowledgment.
Thank you for your cooperation and support. I look forward to continuing to highlight our outstanding athletes.
