GRAFTON – With the Christmas holiday behind us its once again time to open the 2017-2018 Grafton Biddy League season with the 22nd annual Tommy Shay Memorial Basketball Tournament. This year the tournament got underway on December 26th and will run through the championship game on December 28th.
The Biddy League is divided into age divisions. The “older teams” (4th-6th grade) began play on Tuesday night as the Jets took on the Pistons. The Jets always play the first game of the season as that is the team that Tommy Shay played for and coached. In the opening game the Pistons defeated the Jets 32 to 26. The leading scorer for the Pistons was Kaige Andrews and the top scorer for the Jets was Jude Minard.
The “younger teams” (2nd and 3rd grade) then took the floor for the next two games. In the first game the Little Celtics beat the Little 76ers 16 to 14 in double overtime. Josh McIe led the Little 76ers in scoring while the Little Celtics were led by Gage Alexander.
In the next game the Little Jets defeated the Little Pirates 16 to 12. AJ Mauller and Chase Kinsey led the Little Pirates in scoring and Cameron Gray and Jacob Moats led the Little Jets.
In night cap on Tuesday night the Celtics defeated the Lakers 22 to 13. Cody Cook led the Lakers offense while Mason Markley was the top scorer for the Celtics.
The Tournament continued on Wednesday night as the Pistons defeated the 76ers 30 to 25. Mason Dunham led the Pistons with 12 points while Talon Stout was the leading scorer for the 76ers.
In the second game of the day the Celtics defeated the Pirates 26 to 15. Aiden Kelpfel led the Celtics while Kaden Tate led the Pirates in scoring.
The two championship games were played on Thursday night at the Social Center. The results will be in next week’s edition of the Mountain Statesman.
