11U Base Invaders dominate on the diamond

GRAFTON—The Base Invaders 11U team, coached by Julie Dowdy, Becky Phillips, Rachel Gerkin and Sam Gerkin, has been taking the softball diamond by storm and recently notched in two more wins.

In their contest against Shinnston, Makayla White, Adree Wiles and Braelynn Jones got things started for the team in the top of the first inning, each making a run for the Invaders.

Jones would start out the bottom of the first toeing the rubber, striking out three Shinnston players and only allowing one run.

During the top of the second, Hannah Dowdy, Olivia Barker, White, Mya Johnson and Jones all knock in run.

Kaizley Carr would bring Jones home with her inside-the-park homerun, however, Carr’s own run across the home plate would not count, as there is a five-run rule for innings, which had been reached.

Shinnston managed to score two more runs during the bottom of the second, and Jones would strike out another three batters for the Invaders.

The top of the third went scoreless for the Taylor County team

Jones on fire from the mound would go into the bottom of the third striking out another Shinnston player and only allowing one run and getting an out at first with pitcher and first base duo Jones and Carr.

Jones’ catch for the out would end the game with the Base Invaders on top 8-4.

The Base Invaders also earned an impressive 10-3 over Bridgeport this week.

Once again getting things started for the Invaders was the combination of  White, Mya Johnson, Wiles, Jones, and Carr, all crossing the plate to quickly put the Taylor County team on top 3-0.

Switching for the bottom of the first, Pitcher Olivia Barker struck out one Bridgeport player, and only allowed one run.

Barker would go on to be the lone scorer for the Invaders at the top of the second. From there, she recorded two more strikeouts and didn’t allow a single run for the bottom of the second inning.

At the top of the third, the Base Invaders notched in four more runs by Abagail Asebes, White, Jones and Carr further extending their lead.

To finish out the contest, Bridgeport scored two runs, while Barker through another strikeout.

However, Bridgeport’s last stitch efforts fell short, and the Invaders claimed the 10-3 win, moving to 7-5 on the season.
